New Delhi: How many migrant workers died during the lockdown? In the monsoon session of Parliament beginning Monday, the opposition had lashed out at the government over the question. The uproar escalated when the central government responded that they did not have any data on it.

Later on Friday, the government was once again questioned as to how many people died on labour special trains during the lockdown. Replying to the question in the Rajya Sabha, the government said that a total of 97 people have died till September 9. Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on behalf of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O'Brien, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said, "A total of 97 people have died till September 9."

He further said that out of these 97 deaths, 87 bodies have been sent by the state police for postmortem. So far 51 post-mortem reports have been received by the State Police. The deaths were attributed to cardiac arrest, heart disease, brain haemorrhage, lung and liver disease. Railway Protection Police was quoted as saying that 80 people died on a Labour special train between May 9 and May 27.
