New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Tuesday stated that the government never sought the resignation of Urjit Patel as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India over clashes in handling liquidity pressure in certain sectors.

He was speaking at a TV Channel event. He stated that the government does not need a single penny from RBI's capital reserves during the present fiscal.

He also responded to condemnation over surprise resignation of Patel as RBI Governor earlier this month. He stated that there were cordial discussions at the meeting of the RBI board over issues such as the appropriate dimensions of reserves the central bank must hold.

"The government never asked for his resignation," he asserted.

Worth mention here after Patel's resignation, the PM Modi led Center government appointed former bureaucrat Shaktikanta Das as the Governor of RBI.
