Govt implements Suryamitra Skill Dev Programme to boost Green Jobs

New Delhi: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is  implementing the Suryamitra Skill Development Program through the National Institute of Solar Energy, Gurugram since the start of the financial year 2015–16, in a bid  to train young people over the age of 18 as solar PV technicians for the installation, operation, and maintenance of solar power projects.

 In a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Bhagwanth Khuba confirmed the information, stating that, "Up to June 2022, a total of 51,331 candidates have benefited from the skill development training provided under the Suryamitra programme, out of which 26,967 number of candidates gained employment."

The Suryamitra programme has been rated as having a high level impact in terms of indicators like scale/spread of operation, filling of skill gap, work readiness of trainees, and employability percentage in the third-party evaluation report of the Human Resource Development Program submitted in May 2021, the minister said.

More than 90% of the trainees reported an improvement in technical knowledge, improved performance in the sector, and 88% of trainees reported an increase in job opportunities, according to the Impact Assessment Report for the Suryamitra training programme created by the Skill Council of Green Jobs in December 2020, he said.

An autonomous institute within the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE). An Apex National Centre for Research and Technology Development and Related Activities in the Areas of Solar Energy Technologies in the Country, located at Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, Gwal Pahari, Gurgaon, was recently set up by the Government of India by converting its formerly Solar Energy Centre.
