New Delhi: Due to complaints over the new Income Tax system, the Union government is considering extending the deadline for filing income tax returns beyond December 31, 2021.
On December 26, the Internal Revenue Service announced that over 4.43 crore income tax returns (ITRs) for the 2020-21 fiscal year had been filed, with over 11.68 lakh ITRs filed on December 25.
Up until December 25, 2021, around 2.41 crore ITR-1 and 1.09 crore ITR-4 would be filed for FY2020-21 (The assessment Year 2021-22). "A total of 4,43,17,697 ITRs have been filed up to 25.12.2021," the agency tweeted, "including 11,68,027 ITRs filed on the day itself." Individuals have until December 31 to file their ITRs under the extended deadline. The deadline was originally set for July 31, 2021.
Several business groups and chartered accounting societies have also petitioned the Finance Ministry to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) for the assessment year 2021-22. (ie. the financial year 2020-21).
