Govt promoting setting up on FPOs to help small farmers increase their revenue

New Delhi: Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Monday that the government will encourage the formation of more Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) across the country as part of its efforts to boost small and marginal farmers' income.

He said the government has already initiated a scheme to build up 10,000 FPOs with an outlay of Rs 6,865 crore, and the program is being implemented at a quick speed, speaking at the CII-NCDEX FPO Summit.

Tomar said, the program of establishing FPOs is particularly beneficial in assuring small and marginal farmers' progress. With average land holdings of less than 1.1 hectare, nearly 86 percent of farmers are small and marginal. He also said,  the government is working to make Indian agriculture viable and prosperous for farmers. The government is working to ensure the availability of simple financing, market linkages, and the elimination of middlemen in agri marketing in order to enhance farmers' income,  he added.

The government is also encouraging farmers to grow high-value crops that meet global quality standards, as well as promoting the use of technology in the agricultural sector, crop diversification, and encouraging farmers to grow high-value crops that meet global quality standards.
