NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced on Saturday that it had issued a notification setting the regulations for the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme. 

According to the notification dated June 24th, 2022, the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme rating will give consumers an indication of the level of protection offered to occupants by evaluating the vehicle in the areas of (a) Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), (b) Child Occupant Protection (COP), and (c) Safety Assist Technologies (SAT).

The vehicle will be given a star rating ranging from one to five stars based on its performance in various tests conducted in accordance with Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. The government has inserted a new rule 126E in the CMVR (Central Motor Vehicles Rules), 1989 regarding the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) with the issuance of the notification, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said in a statement on Saturday.

The new rule applies to Type Approved motor vehicles of category M1 [passenger vehicles with eight seats in addition to the driver's seat] with a gross vehicle weight of less than 3.5 Tonnes that are manufactured or imported into the country in accordance with the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS)-197, as amended from time to time. "The standard is in line with global benchmarks: it goes above and beyond minimum regulatory requirements," the ministry stated.
