New Delhi: The Government of India will implement the National Population Register (NPR) across the country on the lines of the NRC in Assam. The Government has decided to prepare a National Population Register (NPR) with details of all citizens of the country by 2020. The NPR aims to prepare the details of every citizen living in the country. It will cover everyone who has been living in a local place for the past six months or the person who wants to settle in the area for six months or more.

It will include demographic and biometric details of each citizen. Once it is published in full, the Government will prepare the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC). Registrar General Vivek Joshi of the Civil Registration and Census Commissioner said that the census work for NPR will start from April 1, 2020. The teams will go door-to-door to collect data across the country except Assam. He said the work is targeted to be completed by September 30, 2020 under the supervision of the local registrar.

For everyone settled in India, it will be necessary to register their name in NPR. This was also mentioned by President Ram Nath Kovind in his address at the beginning of the 17th Lok Sabha. The government's move has been opposed by other opposition parties from the beginning. In Assam, when the NRC was published on July 30 last year, there was a big uproar when 40.7 lakh people were named. There have been a lot of loopholes in the entire process.
