On Friday, the Lok Sabha was informed that linking of Aadhaar details with voter identity cards had not yet started. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also said no targets have been set for linking Aadhaar details with the electoral photo identity card.

Responding to queries, Meghwal revealed that the linking of Aadhaar with voter identity cards has not commenced, emphasizing that no specific targets have been set for this purpose. He clarified that the Election Commission of India has not initiated the linking process and extended the deadline for submitting Form 6B, necessary for linking Aadhaar cards, until the end of March 2024.

Meghwal stressed that linking Aadhaar with the Electoral Photo Identity Card is an optional process, requiring the elector's consent for Aadhaar authentication through Form 6B.

Furthermore, in response to a question raised by Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, Meghwal confirmed that individuals whose identity cards remained separate had not been removed from the voters' list.

Highlighting the Election Commission of India's responsibility for overseeing the preparation of the electoral roll under Article 324 of the Constitution, Meghwal stated that the Commission maintains data with robust multi-layered security measures. He emphasized that electoral data is encrypted both statically and in transit.

This development comes shortly after the government announced intentions to create a unique identifier linked to the Aadhaar card, aimed at safeguarding the rights of migrant workers. The plan involves integrating these details into the e-Shram database and mandating the identifier for all building and construction workers across the nation.
