Grace Hopper Conference is the largest conference for women technologists in the world, aimed at bringing together women in computing to discuss careers, and breakthroughs in technology and foster a culture of innovation and growth. GHC 2022 was its first-ever hybrid version with the in-person event taking place in Orlando, Florida between September 20th - September 23rd. The conference was conducted over four days with a packed agenda that included hands-on training experience via open-source workshops, talks presented by industry experts, and panel discussions on thought-provoking topics. Notable speakers from the past include Melinda Gates, Serena Williams, Megan Smith, etc.

At this year's Grace Hopper Conference, whose theme was "Next is Now", Shreya Rajkumar, a Senior Software Engineer at LinkedIn presented a lightning talk on the Evolution of Search at LinkedIn. Shreya is a Georgia Tech alumni who graduated with distinction in Computer Engineering, specializing in Computer Systems and Software. Ever since then, she has been working at LinkedIn in the Search Infrastructure division - the team that builds and maintains LinkedIn's search ecosystem. Search is an essential part of LinkedIn’s member experience with more than 25 million people per week performing at least one search. Shreya is one of the core members of the team who is working towards the next-generation search architecture that is aimed at improving the engineer experience as well as the member experience. The new architecture has reduced the time it takes to build a new search entity type from 21 weeks to 1 week, a staggering 95% improvement!

Her talk at GHC began with a Search 101, going over the basic concepts of information retrieval and the working of search engines. She also shared multiple interesting insights on the internal architecture of the world of search at LinkedIn as well as the evolution it underwent to tackle some of the pressing challenges it faced. The audience was engaged throughout and posed interesting questions which sparked further technical deep dives. The lightning talk had over 2000 attendees from different parts of the globe and was a great start to the rest of the conference.
