Former England and Surrey cricketer Graham Thorpe has passed away at the age of 55, as confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Thorpe, known for his elegant left-handed batting, had a distinguished career, playing 100 Test matches for England from 1993 to 2005, along with 82 one-day internationals. Over his Test career, he amassed 6,744 runs, including 16 centuries, with an average of 44.66.

The ECB expressed profound sorrow over Thorpe's death, stating, "Finding words to convey our shock and sadness is challenging. Graham was not just one of England’s greatest batters, but a cherished figure in the cricket world, beloved by fans globally. His talent was undeniable, and his contributions over a 13-year international career brought immense joy to teammates and supporters of England and Surrey CCC."

Thorpe made an impressive start with an unbeaten 114 on his Test debut against Australia in 1993 and achieved his highest Test score of 200 not out against New Zealand in 2002. His entire 17-year first-class career was spent with Surrey, from 1988 to 2005.

Surrey’s chair, Oli Slipper, expressed deep sadness, saying, "Graham was one of Surrey's greats, and it is heartbreaking to know he will no longer walk through the Oval gates." Surrey's chief executive, Steve Elworthy, added, "He accomplished extraordinary feats for both club and country and was a true hero to countless cricket fans."

The cricket community mourns the loss of a remarkable player and coach, sending heartfelt condolences to Thorpe’s wife Amanda, his children, his father Geoff, and his extended family and friends.
