India's legendary table tennis player G Sathiyan has started his campaign in the $2 million Singapore Smash 2022 tournament, winning 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 against Chinese Taipei's Peng Yuv-in-Koen here on Saturday.
Sathiyan, ranked 33rd in the world, has not had to work much against the number 140 player. Sathiyan will face the winner of the Round of 64 match between world number 8 Lin Gaoyuan of China and Lim Jonghun, ranked 59th of South Korea, in the next round. World number 34 veteran Sharath Kamal, however, lost 1-3 (11-6, 7-11, 6-11, 8-11) to Sweden's 31st-ranked Anton Calberg in less than 40 minutes.
Another Indian legend Manika Batra has also been dismissed from the first round with a defeat against Mo Zheng. Manika, ranked 46th in the world, has lost 12-14, 12-10, 13-11, 11-8 despite winning the first game against the Chinese-born Canadian. Meanwhile, India's Suhana Saini and Yashaswini Ghorpade defeated Romania's Elena Jahria and Luciana Mitrofan 11-9, 11-7, 11-6 in straight games on Friday night to clinch the first gold medal at the WTT Youth Star Contender Doha 2022.
