Athens: On Wednesday, December 8, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will travel to Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin, according to government spokesperson Yiannis Oikonomou.

"The prime minister will be in Sochi on Wednesday," Oikonomou said at a press conference, "where his first meeting as prime minister will be with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he met as opposition leader in Athens in 2016."

Mitsotakis spoke by phone with his Russian counterpart Mikhail Mishustin in August about the devastating wildfires in Greece. A Be-220ChS amphibious aircraft was sent by Russia to assist Greek firefighters. According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to reinforce the Russian team battling flames in central Greece after receiving an urgent request from the Greek administration. To put out the fires, two Ilyushin Il-76 firefighting planes and two Mi-8 helicopters were deployed to Greece.
