Researchers have created plasma-based disinfection that can work as a green de-contaminant for Covid-19 and is generated using cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP).

The Covid pandemic highlighted the urgent need for decontaminants that can prevent infectious diseases from spreading through touch. The majority of de-contaminants, on the other hand, contained compounds that are harmful to the environment.

This prompted the research team to seek out greener alternatives. They showed that plasma formed by cold atmospheric pressure (CAP) can inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which binds to the human ACE2 receptor and causes viral infection and subsequent Covid-19.

Plasma, the fourth form of matter that makes up the majority of the universe, is known as Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma when created in a lab under controlled conditions (CAP). The scientists used a high voltage electric field to pass plasma-forming gases like Helium, Argon, and Air through, resulting in the development of a stable plasma with a mixture of ions and electrons releasing a pink glow of CAP inside the reaction chamber.
