Gujarat Congress leader Ashwin Kotwal has left the party. In a major defeat for the Gujarat Congress ahead of the Assembly election, the party's senior tribal leader and three-term legislator Ashwin Kotwal has resigned from both the party and the Assembly, and is expected to join the BJP. Speaker Nimaben Acharya accepted Kotwal's resignation as a legislator.
On Tuesday, he and his followers are expected to join the ruling party.

Kotwal, a three-term MLA from the Schedule Tribe-reserved Khedbrahma Assembly constituency in north Gujarat, was enraged by the Congress leadership's "ignorance" of him. He was a candidate for the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, but the party's top leadership picked someone else.

The ruling party is hoping that by bringing in  Kotwal, it would be able to fill the void left by the absence of a tribal figure in north Gujarat.
