Jamnagar: The Jamnagar Court in Gujarat has convicted sacked IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt and his associate. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment. In fact, violence erupted during the Bharat Bandh in Jamnagar in 1990. Bhatt was the ASP of Jamnagar at that time. Meanwhile, 133 people were detained by the police, 25 injured and eight were hospitalized for treatment.

Prabhudas Madhavji Vaishnani, an accused, died after being in judicial custody. Bhatt and his associates were accused of beating in police custody. A case was registered against Sanjeev Bhatt and other policemen in the case, but the Gujarat government did not allow prosecution. In 2011, the state government allowed a trial against Bhatt.

On Wednesday (June 12), the apex court refused to consider Sanjeev Bhatt's plea. Bhatt had sought a fresh probe into the death case against him. Sanjeev Bhatt is a suspended IPS officer from Gujarat. Bhatt had challenged the Gujarat High Court order in the Supreme Court.
