Ahmedabad: Hardik Patel, the working president of the Gujarat Congress Committee, resigned from Congress on Wednesday after lately expressing dissatisfaction with the state party leadership.

Patel turned to Twitter to say, "Today, I took the guts to resign from my position as working president of the Gujarat Congress Committee and my primary membership in the Congress Party. All of my colleagues and the people of Gujarat will undoubtedly applaud my decision. After this step, I believe I will be able to work sincerely for Gujarat in the future."

Sources stated that ahead of the state assembly elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reached out to unhappy Gujarat Congress Committee working president Hardik Patel to iron out disagreements in the party unit.

According to party sources, Rahul Gandhi himself sent Hardik Patel a note imploring him to stay in the party. He also requested that the party's leader and senior officials contact Patel to resolve the disputes.

Rumours were rife about Patel joining the BJP after he had praised the BJP government for revoking Article 370 and the construction of Ram Mandir.  He later clarified that he was not dissatisfied with party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, but rather with the state leadership.
