Patan-Gujarat: Seven people reportedly killed in a road accident near Varahi in the Patan district of Gujarat following their jeep rammed into a standing truck on Wednesday noon, Gujarat police said.

The collision reportedly happened on Wednesday, and following an overnight investigation, the police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) in the subject.

As per FIR report, it said, the jeep was carrying about 18 persons, of whom 11 were injured, five critically injured, five died at the scene, and two more died from their wounds later that night.

Pinal Mithunbhai Vanzara, age 7, Kajal Mohanbhai Parmar, age 9, Amita Khemrajbhai Vanzara, age 15, Seemaben Mithunbhai Vanzara, age 24, Raghaben Mohanbhai Parmar, age 35, Samjubhai Babubhai Florist, age 50, and Dughabhai Sejabhai Rathod, age 50, were all listed as the deceased.

The driver of the jeep, who allegedly leaped from the car when the front tyre of the car burst, was blamed for the disaster, it was further said. 

The deceased's kin said that the vehicle was quite old and that it was overloaded with passengers. He demanded that the driver be held accountable and said that he killed the people out of greed for money.

"Among the dead is my aunt, sister, and 5 other people of my family who died on the spot and 2 others died later during the treatment. It was a very old vehicle and carried 18 to 20 people, which was much more than its capacity. The driver took them in such a car, which could have met with the accident any time, in the greed of money," said Parmar Bharatbhai, brother of one of the deceased.

He further claimed the government take strict action against such vehicle owners and sought compensation for the loss of lives and treatment of the injured.

Police said that the injured persons were taken to different hospitals in Radhanpur and Patan. An FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act was lodged against the drivers of both vehicles, said police.
