Surat packaging unit catches fire, labourers jump from 5th floor to save lives

Surat: Workers jumped from the 5th floor after a fire broke out at a packaging unit in Surat, Gujarat this morning, killing one worker so far. The administration claims that 125 people have been evacuated safely. Fire brigade vehicles are trying to douse the flames on the spot. It is yet to be ascertained how many workers were injured when they jumped from the 5th floor.

According to information received, a fire broke out at a packaging unit at Vareli in the Kadodra area of Surat on Monday. However, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Police said a lot of workers were working on the fifth floor when the fire broke out. The workers were scared to see the flames rising and started jumping from the fifth floor to save their lives. A worker has lost his life in the incident.

According to the administration, several workers who jumped from the 5th floor have been badly injured. However, fire brigade workers who arrived after receiving information about the fire in the packaging unit were brought down from the hydraulic lift. More than 100 people are said to have been evacuated from the packaging unit. Fire brigade personnel are still engaged in the fire control exercise and about a dozen fire brigade vehicles are present on the spot.
