ANKARA: After gunfire struck the ambassador's car earlier, Turkey has decided to move its embassy from Khartoum to Port Sudan, said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. This decision was made in response to an earlier incident in which the ambassador's car was the target of gunfire.
Cavusoglu was cited as saying, "For the safety of our embassy and our colleagues, we decided to move our embassy to Port Sudan," according to the semi-official Anadolu Agency, according to Xinhua news agency.
The Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had been briefed of the transfer plans by Turkish Ambassador Ismail Cobanoglu, the Turkish minister said.
The choice was taken after the Turkish ambassador's official vehicle came under gunfire on Saturday; no one was hurt, but the vehicle did receive damage.
The RSF and the Sudanese army traded allegations after the incident. The RSF reiterated its commitment to safeguarding diplomatic missions in the nation and asserted that the attack took place in an area under military control. The RSF, on the other hand, was blamed by the army for the attack.
One of the main requirements of Sudan's transition deal with political groups, the RSF's integration into the armed forces, had been causing friction between the two sides in recent months.
Sudan has been without a functioning government since the military ousted Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's transitional administration in late 2021 and imposed a state of emergency, a move that was denounced by political forces as a "coup."
Elections were supposed to mark the end of the transitional era, which began in August 2019 after the ouster of longstanding leader Omar al-Bashir.
