Guntur: Nageswara Rao, a police head constable at Tadepalli in Guntur district, while on duty saw a woman with her children jumping into the Buckingham canal. He immediately swung into action and rescued them with the help of local fishermen. Santhipriya of Rudravarpu, fed up with the tyranny of her father-in-law Ramakrishna, decided to commit suicide and jumped into the canal along with her two children.
Nageswara Rao, attached to the police outpost near Prakasam barrage in Sitanagaram, said he had received information about a woman with two children jumping into the Buckingham Canal and attempting suicide. They rescued the woman and her two children with the help of ropes with the help of fishermen and local youths. Further, the Tadepalli police called the family members and counselled them. He later handed over the woman and children to him.
According to police officials, both the kidneys of Shantipriya's husband Pawan Kumar were damaged. Santhipriya donated her kidney to her husband. But the father-in-law Ramakrishna harassed Shantipriya and blamed her for Pawan Kumar's health condition. On Friday, he got into a fight with a pacifist. Unable to bear her harassment, she jumped into the Buckingham Canal along with her two children, Spandana and Shalem Raju, and attempted suicide. Police officials praised Head Constable Nageswara Rao's spontaneous response in saving the lives of three people. Husband Pawan Kumar thanked Nageswara Rao and the fishermen for saving his wife and children. Guntur Urban SP's Arif Hafeez handed over a certificate of appreciation to head constable Nageswara Rao at the DPO on Friday night and praised him for his effortless action.
