Origin of Maa Shailputri - According to the legend, Prajapati Daksha performed a difficult penance of Adishakti in the past. Pleased with this, Adishakti gave the boon of being born as a daughter. Later, when she was born in Prajapati Daksha's house as Sati, she forgot everything. When she grew up, one night Shiva came in her dream and reminded her. After this, Mother Sati started worshiping Lord Shiva. At the same time, Prajapati Daksha started looking for a bride for their marriage, but mother Sati had considered Shiva as her husband. Hence, he turned down the father's proposal. After this, Mother Sati was married to Lord Shiva. However, his father was not pleased. Meanwhile, once Prajapati Daksha organized a Mahayagya, in which Mother Sati and Lord Shiva were not invited.

When mother Sati came to know about this, she started insisting on going to Yajna with Shiva. At that time Lord Shiva said - O Goddess! All the worlds have been invited in this yagya, but only you have not been invited. This means that you should not join that yagya. It would be best for you not to go there, but if mother did not accept Sati, then Shiva allowed her to go. When mother Sati joined the yagna, no one welcomed her. At the same time, derogatory things started happening to Shiva. Then mother Sati realized that she made a mistake by coming here. After this he gave his sacrifice at the Yagya altar. Later, mother Sati Shailraj is born in the Himalayas. Hence, they are called mother Shailputri.
