UNITED NATIONS: In a bid to avoid polarisation of the global market and economy, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for discussion and negotiations between the United States and China on trade and technology.
Commenting on the United States' long-running technology battle with China, Guterres said he has always argued for the need for a unified global market and economy, according to reports.
"I've said many times that we must avoid at all costs the division of the world into two, each with their own economic system and set of rules, each with their own dominant currency, each with their own internet, and each with their own technological strategy and artificial intelligence and other aspects," he said at a press conference.
To avert such a scenario, the UN Chief urged the world's two largest economies to establish common ground on trade and technology through communication and negotiation. "Now, it is evident that there are a number of discrepancies at the time," he remarked.
"I have been asking for a meaningful dialogue and serious negotiation with both the United States and China."
