UNITED NATIONS – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed great concern on Tuesday about a missile assault in Erbil, Iraq, that occurred on Sunday, according to Farhan Haq, his deputy spokesperson.
The incident occurred at a crucial juncture in Iraq's quest for peace and stability. According to the spokesman, the secretary-general reiterated his request for all parties involved to display restraint and avoid escalation.
Guterres asked Iraq's allies to back Iraq's efforts to enhance regional peace and security based on the values of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and good neighbourly relations.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) acknowledged on Sunday that it carried out an attack in Erbil, Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish area, on what it claimed was an Israeli intelligence base. According to the IRGC, the action was in response to an Israeli airstrike on the Syrian capital of Damascus on March 7, in which two IRGC officers were killed.
