UNITED NATIONS : UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised the safe evacuation of citizens from Ukraine's Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol.

"I am glad that more than 100 civilians have been successfully evacuated from the Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol, in an operation successfully managed by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross," said a top UN official.

"I hope that our sustained coordination with Kiev and Moscow will result in more humanitarian pauses, allowing civilians to safely flee the conflict and help to reach those who need it most," Guterres said.

According to news sources, more than 100 people were evacuated from the besieged city of Mariupol in Ukraine by both the Russian and Ukrainian armies on Monday.

The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also confirmed that the first evacuees had begun to arrive at a reception centre in Zaporizhzhia, around 200 kilometres north of Mariupol. OCHA tweeted that the buses were moving on Sunday and were organised by the UN, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and "parties to the war."
