Guwahati: On Sunday, Guwahati Police arrested two smugglers who were found with heroin valued at approximately ₹2.5 crore. According to Assam Police Chief Public Relations Officer Pranabjyoti Goswami, the Special Task Force (STF) conducted an operation in Guwahati based on a tip-off, leading to the seizure of a significant amount of drugs.

The tip-off indicated that the narcotics were being transported from Dimapur to Lower Assam via the Avadh Assam Express by two smugglers based in Barpeta. Acting on this information, the police arrested the smugglers at their rented accommodation in Katahbari, Guwahati. During the operation, they recovered 22 soap boxes containing a total of 308 grams of heroin from the suspects. The police plan to use the information obtained from the interrogation of these smugglers to dismantle the broader drug network involved. Senior officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing. According to Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) standards, the total value of the seized heroin is estimated to be around ₹2.46 crore.

In a related incident, Assam police recently seized Yaba pills—comprising methamphetamine and caffeine—worth about ₹30 crore in Karimganj district. Two smugglers were also arrested in this case. Police intercepted a vehicle from Mizoram based on intelligence reports, leading to the discovery of the drug consignment. The challenging terrain of the Northeast, characterized by hilly and forested areas, complicates efforts to apprehend smugglers.
