Hadiya or Akhila Ashokan, the woman who converted to Islam and married a Muslim man as a part of his constitutional right has been surrounded by controversy since she took this step. After months of following restrictions imposed on her, a consenting adult, Hadiya is all set to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court demanding her right to live a life of her own will and wish.

It all started when she converted to Islam wishfully and later married a Muslim man. Her father had objections to the decision and approached Kerala High Court claiming his daughter’s husband has trapped her in love-jihad to push her into terrorism and send to Syria. Following this, the high court nullified the marriage and sent the adult daughter to her father’s home where she was kept in a small room, not allowed to meet anybody or go out.

“I have been under confinement without the freedom that I am entitled to. Even now, I am under police surveillance. I most humbly pray that my entire liberty may kindly be restored to me,” wrote Hadiya in the affidavit.

She demanded the top court to provide her with basic rights as mentioned in the constitution. She also said that her father is influenced by some people and asked for action against them.

“I further pray that this Hon’ble Court may be kind enough to appoint my husband as guardian. I most humbly pray that this Hon’ble Court may be pleased to allow us to live together as husband and wife,” she pleaded.

The top court will hear the case on Thursday.
