Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan announced on Friday that since January 15, 2021, hallmarking of gold jewelry and artifacts has become mandatory across the country. For this, the jewelers can be given a year's extension. With hallmarking mandatory, customers will get pure gold. Currently hallmarking on gold jewelry is optional. Paswan said that the Department of Consumer Affairs will issue notification related to making gold hallmarking mandatory by January 15, 2020. After that one-year deferment has been given so that the jewelers can remove their old stock. Paswan also clarified that the ministry has no plans to mandate hallmarking of old jewelry lying with customers.

What is hallmarking
Hallmark is proof of the purity of gold. Hallmarking is currently implemented on a voluntary basis. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), through the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, is the administrative authority for Hallmark. Hallmark Gold Jewelry carries a BIS mark. This trace suggests that the purity of gold has been tested at the Licensed Laboratory. BIS has set standards for hallmarks for three grades - 14 carats, 18 carats, and 22-carat gold.

Know how much purity is in many carat golds
14 carat - 58.3 percent (583)

18 carat - 75 percent (750)

20 carats - 83.3 percent (833)

22 carat - 91.7 percent (917)

24 carat - 99.9 percent (999)
