Durgawati Devi was one of the revolutionaries in India's freedom struggle. With the famous revolutionary Bhagat Singh, Durgawati Devi traveled by Calcutta Mail on 18th December 1928. On the appeal of Chandrashekhar Azad, the wife of revolutionary Bhagavaticharan Bohra, who prepared the philosophy of bomb papers, was known as Durga Bhabhi among the revolutionaries. Durga Bhabhi presided over the meeting convened in Lahore to avenge the death of Lala Lajpatrai in 1927. In a plan to kill the then Governor Haley of Mumbai, an English officer named Taylor was injured, on which the bullet was fired by Durga Bhabhi.

Durgawati Devi was born on October 7, 1907, at pandit Banke Bihari's house in Shahzadpur village of Allahabad, UP. Her father was a clerk in the Collectorate Her grandfather, Pandit Shivshankar, who was a landlord in Shahjpur had helped Durga Bhabhi since childhood. In a span of 10 years, Durga Bhabhi was married to Bhagavaticharan Bohra in Lahore. Durga Bhabhi's father-in-law Shivcharan was posted in a high position in the railways. He was honored with the title of Rai Saheb by the British government.

Durga Bhabhi soon began to support her husband's work after she got married to revolutionary Bhagavaticharan Bohra. Her house was a haven for revolutionaries. They respect everyone, affectionately, and they would be respected. So all the revolutionaries started calling her 'Bhabhi'. Devi, along with her husband, helped Vimal Prasad Jain, an HSRA member, in running a bomb factory named 'Himalayan Toilets' (a smokescreen to hide the agenda of making bombs) at Qutub Road, Delhi. After Indian independence, Durga Devi started living as a common woman in Ghaziabad. She later opened a school for poor children in Lucknow. Durga died in Ghaziabad on 15 October 1999 at the age of 92.
