Since childhood, Mother Teresa was inclined towards social service, due to which she decided to become a Roman Catholic nun at a very young age. She joined the Catholic Church at the age of 18, after which she never returned to her home.

Italy-born Mother Teresa chose India as her workplace and in 1950 established the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata. Her objective of starting this institution was that through these missionaries, she could help the poor, sick and orphaned. She also gave shelter to leprosy patients whom the society had rejected. Along with this, she also served the TB patients.

Mother Teresa has also been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her social work. She has also been honored with many other awards. Mother Teresa's name was also related to some controversies. Her opponents had accused that her motive of conversion was hidden behind her human service. However, she never said anything about it. Mother Teresa died of a heart attack on 5 September 1997.
