According to media reports, he was born in 1934 in Benares. It is said that Sujit Kumar was studying law before appearing in films. He participated in a college play while studying. The judge's panel of this drama also included the famous producer-director Phani Mazumdar. He was impressed by Sujit Kumar's acting in the play.

Phani Majumdar Sahib offered Sujit Kumar to come to the movies and he agreed to the film. After this, he did many super hit films in the 60s and 70s. As much as Sujit Kumar's friendly style was shown in films with Rajesh Khanna, their friendship was quite good even in personal life. Rajesh Khanna and Sujeet alone did about 12 films together.
