Amritsar:  Protests continue across India in response to the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Harbhajan Singh has added his voice to the growing chorus of demands for justice. In a letter addressed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Harbhajan expressed his profound anguish over the lack of progress in the case.

Harbhajan Singh posted the letter on his X account, expressing his dismay over the slow pace of justice for the victim. He urged Chief Minister Banerjee and the West Bengal Governor to take swift and decisive action. "This incident has deeply disturbed all of us. I have requested both the Chief Minister and the Governor to ensure that the perpetrators face the full extent of the law, and that their punishment serves as an example to prevent future tragedies," Harbhajan wrote. In his letter, Harbhajan emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and dignity of women. He argued that the law must deliver justice promptly to restore faith in the system and foster a society where women feel secure. "The time for action is now," he stated.

The letter, which was also addressed to West Bengal Governor C.V. Anand Bose and the citizens of India, describes the violent act as not only an attack on an individual but also on the dignity and safety of all women. Harbhajan highlighted that the crime took place within a medical institution, a setting devoted to healing and saving lives, making it all the more shocking.

He also criticized the lack of immediate and effective action, noting that over a week had passed without significant progress. The incident has led to widespread protests by doctors and the medical community, who are already working under challenging conditions. Harbhajan questioned how the medical professionals can be expected to perform their duties effectively when their own safety is at such risk.
