Deepti Sharma displayed exceptional game knowledge to run Charlotte Dean at the non-end strikers of the third and final women's ODI between India and England to earn a 16-run victory for India. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) recently transferred the dismissal from the "Unfair Play" area to the "Run out" section, and the International Cricket Council soon after authorised the style of removal. The dismissal is more popularly referred to as "Mankad" among the cricket community.
Dean and Freya Davis made an unexpected comeback for the hosts when they were down by 118 runs in the 170-run chase for England. When Dean was run out by Deepti in the 44th over of the innings, they had put together a 35-run partnership. As is customary with this method of dismissal, the cricket community reacted to it in a variety of ways. A number of England stars, including Stuart Broad and Sam Billings as well as former captain Nasser Hussain, voiced their displeasure. Ravichandran Ashwin, India's top off-spinner, praised Deepti on the decision.
Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian team, was questioned about the dismissal during the post-game presentation after the game. Harmanpreet was questioned further by the host, who insisted that it appeared the Indian captain had shied away from discussing the run-out dismissal. Then, Harmanpreet came up with a brutal rejoinder.
“To be honest, I thought you will ask about all ten wickets, because they were not easy to take,” said Harmanpreet, drawing massive cheers from the crowd.
“It's a part of the game. I don't think we have done something new, you can always take those chances. It shows that you are aware about what the batters are doing. I will back my player because I don't think she has done anything that isn't in the ICC rules. Everything is part of the game. At the end of the day, a win is a win and you need to enjoy that,” Harmanpreet went on to say as she defended Deepti, earning more cheers from the audience.
With the victory, India defeated England 3-0 for a clean sweep of the series, giving bowling mainstay Jhulan Goswami the perfect send-off. In her final international appearance, Goswami recorded outstanding statistics of 2/30 in 10 overs, taking two wickets.
