Eight episodes make comprise the impending second season of HBO's critically acclaimed Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, two fewer than Season 1. I've gathered that it's part of a long-term strategy for the program, one that includes HBO considering giving it the go-ahead for a third season.

Eight episodes will make up season two, according to an HBO official who confirmed the information to the media. The source insisted that the episode count reduction was motivated by the plot. The news breaks just before the second season's UK filming is set to start in preparation for its anticipated summer 2024 broadcast.

In line with that, I've heard that Season 3 has been planned out and may be approved, with HBO seriously considering going forward with scripts, casting, and a production schedule as the network tries to think more long-term than season-by-season.

Based on George R. R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, the prequel House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, which concluded its eight-season run in 2019.

But, that has not yet been decided. According to sources, House of the Dragon is now more likely to last for four seasons. Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D'Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans are among the ensemble cast members in House of the Dragon.
