HC questions TN government why ban on Grama Sabha Meeting when TASMAC is opened till 10PM

The Madras High Court asked the state government's counsel on Thursday that the reason stated to cancel the gram sabha meetings is the social distancing, then how TASMAC are opened in the state throughout the day. DMK principal secretary KN Nehru has moved the plea to high court.

The court ordered the state to respond on the plea challenging the cancellation of gram sabha meetings, which were scheduled on October 2. The state's interference in the internal  affairs of the village panchayats is completely against the principles of democracy, local self-governance and self-determination condemns the petitioner's counsel NR Elango. He added that the state's actions are unconstitutional, malafide and politically motivated and are a violation of the constitutional mandate and provisions of the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act, 1994.

The government said that the COVID-19 guidelines are still in practice and holding gram sabha meetings by enforcing physical distancing is really a difficult challenge. The two-member bench of justices M Sathyanarayanan and R Hemalatha recorded the submissions made by both the counsels. The bench directed the government to file a detailed report on the matter and issued notices on the plea.
