The Government of India has extended the term of the insurance scheme of 50 lakh rupees for people connected with the public health sector for another three months. Now health workers will continue to get an insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh under this scheme till the end of September. The government has taken this step amid increasing number of people infected with Corona virus in the country. About 22 lakh health workers are getting special insurance cover under this scheme. The New India Assurance Company of the government sector is implementing this scheme. The government had earlier set June 30 as the date of this plan.

For your information, let us tell you that in late March this year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Prime Minister's Poor Welfare Package worth a total of 1.70 lakh crore rupees. This insurance cover was announced under this package. At the same, community health workers have also been included in the total 22.12 lakh health workers associated with public health services under this scheme. These health workers come in direct contact with people affected by Corona virus infection. For this reason, they are also at risk of getting infected.

Apart from this, the scheme is being funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare from the National Disaster Response Fund. The benefit of this insurance cover is being given to the doctors, nurses, medical assistants, sanitation workers and some others working in the hospitals under the central and state governments. Announcing the scheme, the Finance Minister had said that the sanitation workers, ward boys, nurses, ASHA workers, assistants, doctors and experts and other health workers will get the benefit of this special insurance facility.
