New Delhi: The healthcare sector plays a significant role in India's economy. Prior to my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, healthcare spending accounted for approximately 4-5% of India's GDP (Gross Domestic Product). 

However, it is important to note that this figure may have changed since then.

India has a vast healthcare industry that encompasses various subsectors, including hospitals, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and supplies, biotechnology, medical tourism, and health insurance.

The sector provides employment to a large number of people, both directly and indirectly, and contributes to economic growth.

The Indian government has been actively working to improve healthcare infrastructure, increase healthcare spending, and enhance access to quality healthcare services across the country. Initiatives such as the National Health Policy and the Ayushman Bharat program have been launched to strengthen the healthcare sector and provide affordable healthcare to the population.

Moreover, India is known as the "pharmacy of the world" due to its significant role in the global pharmaceutical industry. The country is a major exporter of generic drugs and pharmaceutical products, contributing to its economic growth and foreign exchange earnings.

It's worth mentioning that healthcare is a dynamic sector, and the specific figures and contribution to the economy may have changed since my last update.
