Allahabad: Petitions challenging the Uttar Pradesh government's Conversion Ordinance were heard in the Allahabad High Court today. The UP government referred to the Supreme Court hearing of the case in the High Court. The advocate general said that an application has been made on behalf of the state government for transfer of the case to the Supreme Court.

The state government argues that hearings at various places are causing difficulties in the matter. The High Court said the Supreme Court has not stayed the case. The High Court has granted the state government a moratorium till January 25. The High Court will now hold a final hearing on the case on January 25 at 2 pm. The petitioners have challenged the Conversion Ordinance as unnecessary. The petition also expressed apprehension about the misuse of the ordinance. The UP government had filed its reply on January 5 in the case. The government, in its reply, has termed the ordinance as necessary.

The government had said that the ordinance has been brought in view of the law and order. The ordinance has been challenged in four separate petitions. The case was heard in the Division Bench of Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice S.S. Shamsheri.
