The heart of a brain dead woman was transplanted to a woman having a weak heart. The patient was waiting for a month for a donor. With proper consent and counseling of the family members agreed to donate her heart, kidneys, skin, liver and corneas.

This was the 29th heart transplant in Mumbai. After getting the consent of the donors family the traffic department had to make sure the heart was transported quickly. They covered the 28 km distance in 24 minutes.

The surgery was successful and the patient was kept under observation for the next three days. Officials confirmed that this was the 38th successful heart transplant in Maharashtra, putting the state 2nd to Tamil Nadu.

Dr Mulay, Chief of the Cardiac Transplant team said, "the surgery was successful. The patient is now stable and will be kept under observation for the next three days. Donating organs is such a noble deed and it is heartening to see that people have responded so warmly."
