17,000 people lose their lives due to scorching heat

New Delhi: A study by meteorologists claims that more than 17,000 people have died in the country due to heatwave since 1971. As per the study, 1,41,308 persons have died since 1971 due to extreme  hot weather. Out of these, 17,362 people have been killed due to heat wave, which has been classified as EWE. The study says that these deaths constitute 12 per cent of the total deaths due to EWE in the last 50 years.

The study found that Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha have reported the highest number of heat wave deaths. The research paper of the data has been written by M Rajivan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Scientist- Kamaljit Ray, SS Ray, RK Giri and AP Dimri. Kamaljit Ray is the lead author of the paper published early this year.

The signifies in recent weeks that scorching heat in the northern hemisphere has increased. Several people died due to severe scorching heat conditions in Canada and the US early this week. In Vancouver, Canada, the mercury broke all records to more than 49 degrees Celsius. The temperature was observed above 40 degree Celsius in the northern plains of India. The effect of heat was also felt on the mountainous regions. There are many parameters in plains and hilly areas when the actual temperature recorded as 40 degree Celsius and 30 degree Celsius respectively.
