Recently Governor Joao Doria of the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo informed that at least 18 people have died sue to flooding and landslides caused by heavy rains.

"I am following the damage caused by the heavy rains with great sadness. My thoughts and prayers are with the 18 victims' families and friends. "We're working on rescues, and I've approved the release of resources to assist those who have been affected," Doria said on Twitter.

Eleven adults and seven children died as a result of the storms this weekend, and about 500 families were forced to abandon their houses, according to media reports citing the local fire department. The deaths  in the municipalities of Francisco Morato, Franco da Rocha, Varzea Paulista, Aruja, and Embu das Artes, all of which are located in the Sao Paulo metropolitan area, as well as the city of Ribeirao Preto.

On Sunday morning in Varzea Paulista, a couple and their three children, including a one-year-old newborn, were killed when the hillside where their home was located collapsed. In addition, the Juquery River and the Ribeirao Eusebio stream spilled, flooding the village of Franco da Rocha, while rainfall in Bauru caused a sinkhole in the midst of a road.
