Heavy rain wreaks havoc in many states of northern India, 28 dead

New Delhi: Many parts of the country are reeling under floods due to torrential rains these days. Life has been disrupted due to heavy rains in these states. There are also reports of severe loss of life and property. The southern states are also suffering from this calamity. Heavy rains in several states of North India like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab have caused severe loss of life and property yesterday. 28 people are reported to have died and 22 are missing.

Haryana has urged the Army to be prepared after 8.14 lakh cusecs of water was released from the Hani Kund barrage in the Yamuna river. In Himachal Pradesh, at least 22 people, including two Nepalese nationals, were killed and nine others injured in rain related incidents. In Uttarakhand, three people were killed and 22 others went missing due to cloudburst. In Punjab also, three people are reported to have died.

 Delhi government has issued flood warning as the water level in Yamuna rises and people living in low lying areas have been advised to move to safer places as the water level in Yamuna is likely to cross the danger mark. Flood alert has been issued in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh due to rise in water level in Yamuna and its other tributaries.

The Central Water Commission said that several rivers including Ganga, Yamuna and Ghaghra are in spate in Uttar Pradesh. The river Ganga in Badaun, Garhmiteshwar, Narora and Farrukhabad is flowing above the danger mark. Similarly, the Sharda river in Paliyakala and the Ghaghra river in Elginbridge are flowing above the danger mark. The administration has put people living in these states on alert.
