Chennai and its surrounding regions are expected to experience significant rainfall until November 15, with heavy showers driven by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for multiple districts, forecasting widespread rain across coastal and interior areas of Tamil Nadu.
Heavy Rainfall Expected Due to Low-Pressure System
The IMD has warned that Chennai and nearby districts like Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet may receive heavy rainfall, with expected accumulations ranging between 6 to 12 cm in isolated areas. The low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is predicted to advance toward Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, intensifying the rain.
Alerts Issued Across Tamil Nadu
The IMD has escalated rainfall alerts in Tamil Nadu, covering an increasing number of districts. On November 12, 12 districts were placed on alert, expanding to 17 on November 13, then 27 on November 14, and 25 districts on November 15.
Weather Forecast for Chennai
According to the IMD, Chennai and its suburbs may experience moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days. Skies are expected to be partly cloudy, with maximum temperatures around 32-33°C and minimum temperatures around 25°C.
Rain to Extend from Coastal to Interior Regions
Rainfall is anticipated to begin along coastal districts like Tiruvallur and Ramanathapuram from November 12. By November 13, nearby areas are expected to see rain, which will move to southern and some western interior districts by November 14. The IMD forecasts that heavy rain will primarily impact northern and southern coastal districts on November 15, shifting toward western and some northern interior districts on November 16 and 17.
Active Monsoon Phase Brings Relief to Deficit Areas
From November 12, an active monsoon phase is expected to bring relief to areas experiencing rain deficits. Weather blogger Pradeep John noted, “The active monsoon phase picks up from November 12, starting in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet, followed by other regions. It looks like a good rainy week ahead.”
Several districts surrounding Chennai have seen rainfall deficits this season. Since October 1, Kancheepuram has recorded 19 cm of rain, showing a 36% deficit; Tiruvallur recorded 31 cm with a 6% shortfall, and Chengalpet saw 25 cm, reflecting a 31% deficit.
Seasonal Rainfall Data for Chennai and Tamil Nadu
Chennai has recorded 43 cm of rain since October 1, showing a slight surplus of about 1%. Across Tamil Nadu, the state has received 26 cm of rain since October, registering a 1% surplus over the seasonal average.
