Chennai: Heavy rains have again pounded Chennai and its surrounding districts, as well as numerous other locations in north Tamil Nadu, as forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As a result, the impacted area of schools and universities were closed on Thursday. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire and rescue, police, and the health department are also on alert to prevent any adverse incidents.

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) said in a statement that it had already placed motor pumps in low-lying parts of the state capital to minimise water stagnation. The GCC said it was removing plastic and other waste to prevent drains from being clogged, and that 5,700 metric tonnes of garbage are taken everyday from various districts of Chennai.

If waterlogging occurs, the Corporation has cooperated with the state fisheries agency to utilise fishing boats. According to the GCC, 50 boats have been placed on standby in case of an emergency. The districts of Ashok Nagar, Ashok Pillar, and Adayar in Chennai are still flooded as a result of last week's severe rainfall.  In the meantime, due to the severe rainfall, Puducherry has declared school and college holidays. Rains are expected to continue in Chennai and the surrounding regions until November 21, according to the IMD.
