BANGALORE: As torrential rain continued to pour down on Karnataka on Monday, the roadways were flooded and schools and institutions closed for the day.
For the next four days, the state is expected to see nonstop rain, said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Belagavi, Gadag, Koppal, Haveri, Dharwad, Ballary, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, and Ramnagar districts have been placed on yellow alert.
Bangalore city woke up to rainy morning on the first day of the week with drizzles and light showers hampering morning rush in the city. Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi, which are coastal districts, are likely to see heavy rains along with thunder and lightning.
In the neighbouring Chamarajanagar district, a holiday has been announced for schools and institutions due to the recent severe rains. In Mysuru and Mandya districts, heavy rain has disrupted daily life.
Heavy downpur also affected vehicular movement on the Mysuru-Bangalore highway. The people have also complained to the Union Minister for Highways on social media highlighting the plight of the highway.
"The Ramnagar portion of the Bangalore–Mysuru highway has such poor drainage, Nitin Gadkari sir, that the water is entirely clogged at underpasses and curves. Automobiles are drowning "according to Tarang's tweet. They have also inquired about the poor work done by the company that built the motorway.
In Mysuru, Koppal, and Ballary districts, rain-related disasters have claimed the lives of five people. The state's agricultural land has flooded thousands of acres. The mud Ganesh idols that were erected in public spaces have been demolished in a number of locations.
