You all must know that the new moon of Ashwin month is called Mahalaya Amavasya. Yes, it celebrates the last day of Pitru Paksha which was on yesterday i.e. 17th September. Now from today ie 18 September, Malamas has started, which is going to run till 16 October. This time on October 22, Shashthi and on 26 October Vijayadashami is going to be celebrated. Now talk about Malamas, during this time neither any festival is celebrated nor any auspicious work is done.
Actually, the Bengali month of Ashwin is a lunar month, hence Durga Puja is started only after its end. By the way, Malamas is also called Adhimas and Purushottam month. It is said that the sun year is 365 days and 6 hours and the lunar year is considered to be 354 days. There is a difference of about 11 days between these two years and if these 11 days are added every year, then they are equal to one month.
It is this difference that a lunar month comes into existence every three years to complete it, which is called Malamas. Let us tell you that the last time this happened was in 2001 and now it is happening in the year 2020. Actually, this time Durga Puja will be celebrated from October 17 i.e. Sharadiya Navratri will begin.
