Chandigarh: The Punjab-Haryana High Court has summoned the figures of unnatural deaths in the jails of Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh from 2012 to 2015. At the same time, the court said that the compensation will be decided after identifying their family members and the family is going to be handed over. A division bench of Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha and Justice Arun Palli gave this order while hearing the cognizance taken in 2018 on the order of the Supreme Court.

According to the information received, it has been learned that the High Court has ordered Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh to identify the legal heirs of the prisoners who have died due to unnatural causes in the jails so that their Supreme Court orders Under this, appropriate compensation can be given. Apart from this, the High Court has also sought information from both the state governments and the Chandigarh administration about the jails where more prisoners are kept than the prescribed number.

It is also being said that the information about how many posts of staff are lying vacant in the jails, has been ordered to be given to the High Court on 17 March next hearing. The High Court has said that first Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh should inform the two Amicus Curiae appointed to support the High Court in this matter, including the High Court. Then further action will be taken on the basis of this.
