New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the Central government and the Delhi government to take stringent steps to check hoarding and black marketing of medical equipment such as medicines and oxygen concentraters and not wait for a court order for the same. A bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Rekha Palli was hearing a PIL urging the court to direct the court to declare medicines and medical equipment required for treatment of corona patients as essential commodities under the Essential Commodities Act.

Meanwhile, the court said that if something has to be done, it should be done and there is no need to wait for the court order. The bench has sent notices to the Union Health Ministry and the Delhi government on the petition. The petition also urged for setting up of fast track courts to hear cases of hoarding and black marketing of drugs and equipment. Manisha Chauhan, a resident of Delhi, has also sought appointment of special public prosecutors in the courts to look into such cases.

The lawyers appearing for the petitioner told the court that the hoarding and black marketing of medicines and equipment required in corona treatment is not being notified as essential commodities. People are trying to take advantage of it and it seems that the lower courts are not aware of the high court order on the issue.
