Patna: Bihar ranks first in Cannabis seizure cases, according to a new report on smuggling of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in India. In 2020-21, a total of 13,446 kg of Cannabis was recovered in 12 cases in Bihar while 9,001 kg was seized in 10 cases in Nagaland and 8,386 kg in 6 cases in UP. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence recovered about 45 Metric Tonnes of Cannabis across the country. Other states where large quantities of Cannabis were recovered include Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

According to a report by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, the epidemic has posed a challenge in drug seizures as several new methods have been invented for the smuggling of gold and narcotics products. He said courier and postal cargo has become the best way for smugglers to supply drugs. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has termed it as a "concern for national security".

Cannabis is prohibited under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. "It is also a matter of trouble for national security as the areas involved in Cannabis smuggling activities are affected by Left Wing Extremism," the report said. The illicit money from the smuggling of Cannabis is used by such militant groups to fund anti-national activities. Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Assam were at the forefront of Cannabis seizures in 2018-19. UP, Maharashtra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu topped the line in 2019-20. 1,949 crore in 412 cases of smuggling.
