ABU DHABI/DUBAI: Etihad Rail has announced major plans for a new high-speed train service that will link Abu Dhabi and Dubai in just 30 minutes. The trains will run at speeds of up to 350 km per hour, significantly reducing travel time between the two cities. The route will have six stations, including Reem Island, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Zayed Airport in Abu Dhabi, and stations near Al Maktoum Airport and Jaddaf in Dubai. The trains are expected to carry between 400 and 600 passengers.

While tenders for construction contracts have been issued and the network design has been approved, the official launch date of the service has not yet been confirmed.

The announcement was made at Al Faya Depot in Abu Dhabi, with H.E. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and H.E. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, in attendance.

This high-speed train, which will run at 350 km per hour, will pass through several key stations such as Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi. In Dubai, the train will stop near Al Maktoum International Airport and the Al Jaddaf area close to Dubai Creek. In addition to this fast-speed train, Etihad Rail is also planning to launch a regular passenger train service.

The high-speed train and its associated infrastructure will be developed following the completion of tendering. However, there is no specific timeline for its completion yet, according to Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail.

In contrast, the regular passenger train service will connect all of the UAE’s emirates and extend towards the border with Oman. It will pass through Mezeira’a, the Liwa Desert, and famous oases, with stations planned in Sharjah and Fujairah. The regular train will also connect to the GCC Railway once it is operational.

The regular train will travel at 200 km/h and can accommodate up to 400 passengers. It will use the same tracks as the freight trains and have stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. Despite being fully equipped, the exact start date for the regular train service is yet to be revealed.

Etihad Rail, responsible for the project’s development and operation, estimates that the project will contribute Dh145 billion to the UAE's GDP over the next 50 years. This new high-speed passenger service will be distinct from the Etihad Rail freight network, which also shares the same rail system.

The first four stations will be located in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah, improving access for both residents and visitors. These stations will be integrated with metro and bus systems, creating a seamless transport network.

The stations will also feature amenities like business-class lounges, retail shops, and family-friendly services, all inspired by Emirati culture. While the cost and launch date are still undisclosed, significant progress has been made, with tenders issued and network designs approved. Future phases of development are scheduled for the upcoming years. This train service will connect major destinations and tourist attractions, aligning with the UAE's vision to enhance national infrastructure.
