Puducherry: After Karnataka, the hijab controversy has reached Puducherry as well. At a government school at Ariankuppam here, the student was allegedly asked to remove the scarf, following which the students' federation of India (SFAI) representative, Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam, DMK office bearers reached the school. They protested against the student not being allowed to wear a scarf inside the classroom. The incident is said to have taken place on February 7.

Activists protesting outside the school alleged that the girl had been wearing hijab for the past three years, but now why is anyone having a problem with it? The student had said that she was not allowed to wear the hijab inside the classroom on Friday, February 4. At the same time, the school administration responded to the student's statement, saying that till now the girl used to wear scarves only on the school premises, but on Friday, she wore a scarf even after going inside the class. 

While the police reached the spot after a protest outside the school, the protesters demanded action against the school management, the Puducherry government's directorate of school education has asked the head of Arianakuppam Government School to investigate the matter.
